A Tale of Three Metaphors

Three metaphors guide this excellent little book. The "Old Public Administration" featured the metaphor of "rowing." As the authors put it (page 169): ". . .the purpose of government was simply to deliver services efficiently, and that problems were to be addressed primarily by changing the organization's structure and control systems." The "rowing" refers to the hard work of public administration delivering services.

The "New Public Management" uses a different metaphor, "steering." The authors note (page 13): "They are urged to 'steer, not row,' meaning they should not assume the burden of service delivery themselves, but, wherever possible, should define programs that others would then carry out, through contracting or other such relationships. . . .New Public Management [NPM] relies heavily on market mechanisms to guide public programs."

And, finally, the preferred metaphor of the Denhardts, "serving." Their "New Public Service" would focus on "listening" to and "serving" the public. They observe that NPM forgets who owns the boat. That is, government belongs to the people, not the "steerers"; ". . .public administrators should focus on their responsibility to serve and empower citizens as they manage public organizations and implement public policy." (page 23).

One of the more interesting themes that are addressed in this volume: NPM looks at people as customers and tries to figure out how best to make consumers satisfied; the authors of this volume argue that we are to serve citizens, not create satisfied customers. In a democracy, citizenship means something and the people should be engaged through the New Public Service. With its market-oriented perspective, according to the authors, NPM does not consider citizenship as a critical factor.

This is a well written and thought provoking essay, well worth reading by those interested in contemporary public administration, by the idea of public service, and by those wondering how democracy can thrive in a complex organizational world.

Tired of banging my head against the wall

A while back, I received a tweet from PR by the Book looking for folks to read Steve Arterburn's new book, Walking into Walls.

Well, it just so happens, the forehead of my heart is pretty beat up from walking into so many walls over the course of my adult life.

So I replied to the tweet and asked for a review copy of the book.

The book was sent to me with no strings attached. They just asked that I write a review if the book resonated with me in any way.

So, here I am with my copy of Walking into the Walls: 5 Blind Spots that Block God's Work in You sitting beside me, bleeding with pink highlighter. It resonated alright.

Walking into Walls (Worthy Publishing, August 2011), identifies the five "blind spots" that cause us to make poor choices: stubborn resistance, self-centered entitlement, justifiable resentment, blind ignorance, and disconnected isolation.

Steve Arterburn doesn't just inform readers about the walls, he shares practical guidance on how to stop banging our heads against them.

Through his work with New Life Ministries, Arterburn encounters men and women who desperately want to be healed from their hurts and hang-ups but keep repeating the same toxic patterns over and over...walking into walls, if you will.

My initial response to Steve's introductory statement was a mixture of skepticism and hope.

Even if you were living in the worst possible abusive situation or the most neglectful and disconnected relationship, you may have built a wall that keeps you stuck in a dark place where you don't have to stay. Once you take responsibility, you will find new hope and insight as you get your life unstuck and move past your wall.
I've read a boat-load of Christian books, but consistent emotional health seems to continue slipping from my desperate grasp.

Of all the books I've read, Walking into Walls spelled things out the most clearly. Steve Arterburn's matter-of-fact style kept me reading. He didn't waltz around the hard things. He spoke the truth in love.

The walls that hold us back are often constructions built in our own minds from incomplete or misunderstood pieces of reality and combined half-truths woven together in a way that builds a false perception of the truth. In that sense, what often stops us are barriers that aren't really there.
Steve doesn't discount the very real pain many of us have experienced. His compassion and understanding are evident throughout the book. But he understands that we allow our past and present trauma to multiply by the way we think about it.

He provides insight on how to change the way we think about our hurts and the people who perpetrated those hurts.

From romantic relationships and family bonds to job growth and satisfaction to health and recovery, Walking into Walls covers all areas for "getting unstuck" and moving into the future. Taking It to the Next Level

I am a licensed professional counselor and I was listening to the New Life radio show and heard Stephen Arterburn discuss this book. I made a mental note to call to get the book and when I walked to my office my first client gave me a copy of Walking into Walls after having already read it. What a confirmation that I was to read this book!! Within a day I finished it marking several sections that spoke to my life. Especially the wall of justifiable resentment. Oh, do I have justifiable resentment but I began to realize the stumbling block this has become in my life. I saw my life in a new and fresh way through this book. With a built in study guide and an easy to read format this book would be great for a Bible study or for an individual. So if you want to take your walk with God to the next level this book is just the tool needed.

5 Steps to tearing down the walls you have built

How many times have you said to yourself , I am not the one with the problem, my wife is or my husband is, I can handle this on my own, I deserve to be treated better than this. How many walls do you have standing between you and that person you think has the problem or the one that treated you unfair.

These walls stop us from having relationships, happiness and most of all keep us from doing the work that God has planned for us and to live a joyful life. We all need healing and break down the walls and make sure they are not erected again to block our way. We build our own walls even though we do not realize it at the time and we need to learn to deal with our wall and tear it or remain in misery . When one sees reality from a new perspective you are liberated to live with less pain and conflict in your life.

The five walls that the author has the reader dealing with are the Walls of , Stubborn Resistance, Arrogant Entitlement, Justifiable Resentment, Disconnected Isolation and the wall of Blind Ignorance. Can you picture yourself hiding behind one of these walls? I know I have seen myself in some of this book.

With an excellent study guide at the end of this book, I highly recommend this book and if you are like me have a pen, paper and marker handy as you will be using them. If you are familiar with the Women of Faith books Stephen Afterburner was the originator of this successful women's conference started in 1966.

Best AIP cookbook I've seen!

I love this book! Most AIP books have recipes that are too complicated, or use too many ingredients that are hard to find, or that my family won't eat. Not this one! Kid friendly, incredibly simple recipes, and my entire family with varying special dietary needs can eat every single recipe in this book! It truly doesn't have a single recipe with dairy, nuts, eggs, soy, grains, or nightshades! Can't say enough about this book!

Louise’s cookbook is great if you’re looking for simple, delicious autoimmune recipes that turn out well every time. I’m very busy, and it’s tough to spend hours on complicated recipes. There aren’t many autoimmune cookbooks out there, but I’m very glad I got this one.

Some great information for someone newer to the idea of eating better for autoimmune disorders....I don't like the idea, though, of so much usage of the microwave. I know many readers may disagree, but I don't think they should be used much, if at all. Aside from that, there are some quick, easy, tasty new combinations that we are enjoying
