UNDERSTANDING ECONOMICS: The Student-Friendly Textbook, by Allen Smith

One of the best high school economics textbooks ever published is now available as a Kindle book. When Understanding Economics, by Allen W. Smith, Ph.D., was originally published by Random House, it was used in more than 600 schools nationwide. The State of Georgia approved it as one of five economics textbooks for the state adoption list. The approved books were: Understanding Economics (Random House) by Allen W. Smith; Economics (McDougal, Littel & Company) by George G. Watson; Economics: Principles and Practices (Merrill) by Clayton and Brown; Invitation to Economics (Scott Foresman and Co.) by Wolken and Glocker; and The American Economy (Houghton Mifflin) by Sampson and Marienhoff

In order to help teachers choose among the approved books, Georgia State University critiqued the five books as part of a larger study conducted by six Master Teachers of Economic Education. The books were rated on a scale of 1 to 4 where 4 = “excellent.” The directors of the study wrote, “Incidentally, a “4” rating was used sparingly throughout the critiques by the various coders, who agreed that the rating of 4 was to be assigned to truly excellent treatment. Nevertheless, Allen W. Smith’s book received an excellent rating of “4” in nine separate categories, including “readability.” Only one of the other four books received an excellent rating in any category. The Random House book dominated the market in Georgia and was adopted by the Atlanta Public School District, the Fulton County Schools, and many other districts throughout the state. The book received the same kind of reception throughout the country. The Random House editor was so optimistic about the future of the book that she told the author she expected his book to become to high schools what Paul Samuelson’s college economics textbook had been to colleges and universities. So what happened to the book? Random House sold its textbook division, and the book became a victim of merger mania. The author took legal action to get the rights to the book reverted back to him, and he has held onto the rights while publishing six other books. He thinks the time has now come to reintroduce the book, which he thinks can be a major weapon in the battle against massive economic illiteracy, which has made possible the gross economic malpractice that has led the nation to the brink of economic disaster.

Ironwood Publications believes the content of this revised and updated edition is golden, and that it continues to be one of the best high school economics textbooks ever published. We are proud to offer it as a Kindle book, at a very attractive price, at this time of financial hardship for school districts throughout the country. A print edition of the book may be offered at some point in the future but, at this time, it is available only as an ebook.

Limited economics
By antonio ruiz de elvira
Understanding Economics, by Prof. Allen Smith is a nice book to try -understanding- what the very limited discipline taught today at the universities and called 'Economics' could be. Prof. Smith, like almost all or all of his colleagues, has a rather limited understanding of what can 'Economics' be, and he starts the book giving the traditional definition of Economics as the science of choosing: ''Economics is the study of how individuals and society choose to use their limited resources in an effort to satisfy people's unlimited wants''. However, in no place in the book does Prof. Smith deals with the much more important question of how are ''resources'' made available to humanity in the first place, and what to do to increase these resources. That is, to access and increase wealth. In the traditional field of Economics, everything seems to be given by some demiurge
and the only thing humans can do is to try to discover the optimal choice. In the chapter on GDP, Prf. Smith does not help students to discover how and why -services- are a part of Gross Domestic Product, how can it be that paying for a lawsuit can be a -Product-, instead of a form of -antiproduct- , that is, a dissipation of wealth as it is in reality. In summary, an entertaining textbook to introduce readers to a very limited and poor part of real economics, that should be the science of creating and increasing wealth for everybody. In other words, the science of how to make scarce resources abundant. But at least, the book, in its limited outlook, does not burden students with the unnecessary algebraic treatment extant in many other textbooks.

It's Actually Interesting!
By Linda Armstrong
I ordered this to use as quick background for a project and was drawn into it. It makes this "dismal science" clear and understandable. It's a great introduction if you know nothing about the subject.
