The original "The New Physics" had much better aritcles in terms of explaining the concepts underlying the theory. The articles in this book are more akin to watered down articles that you find in magazines like Scientific American. The articles did summarize new experimental data and new technology developments. However, the open questions in "The New Physics" were not addressed in light of the new experimental evidence.

Advances in physics clearly explained

This is a great book on advances in physics that have occurred over the last few years that lies between overly simplistic popular science books and research papers where you become quickly lost in terse language and layers of equations. You do need to have some prior background in physics. Ideally you should have the background of a year of general university level physics and a course in modern physics, or the equivalent of that. Some knowledge of general chemistry would come in handy too. Otherwise, there are enough equations and an assumption of basic physics knowledge on the part of the reader that you'll get lost quickly.

Basically, the book shows you physics in action solving the problems of today using great illusrations and a clear and accessible writing style that holds your interest. The chapters don't build on one another and you can pick and choose what you're interested in. Remember that this is not a textbook, so there are no problem sets. The final strong point of the book is the price. At under forty dollars it's a very reasonable purchase for the casual learner. My favorite sections were part 1 on Matter and the Universe and part 4 on Calculation and Computation. I thought the chapter on superstring theory was particularly well done and clear. I highly recommend this book for getting a good big picture of physics at work.

A humorous novel about English fox-hunting in the 19th century with a plethora of characters who display between all the faults of character of mankind that one still finds today, albeit the faults could be perceived as much more charming in a 19th century rural England setting

Robert Smith Surtees devoted his life basically to two things: fox hunting and novel writing, actually combining both into a single pursuit. He wrote a number of delightful novels centering around the fox-hunting society in and about Durham, England; this was his last book, published posthumously, and among his best. Facey Romford is a confidence trickster who passes himself off as his wealthy namesake, using the other's stationery to pull off the switch. He becomes Master of the Hounds of the Heavyside Hunt, and from that vantage point we are privy to all kinds of characters and happenings. The novel ends with Facey and his new bride going to Australia, not in disgrace, as was hoped by all who knew him, but where his fortunes only increase and all is well. Surtees's humor is broad and ruthless, and his observations on what makes this society tick are keen and perceptive. The novel presents an entertaining look at the sporting side of Victorian England.

A GREAT book for beginners!

This book is a fairly easy and simple introduction to Fortran 90. It is well directed towards the beginner and the beginner will most definitely profit from buying this book. The example codes are well chosen and the exercises provide ample practice in learning the basics of the language. The book covers much of the Fortran 90 syntax and the language reference in the appendix is handy. Presentation wise it is well constructed with a bi-colour approach which is good and makes the concepts easy to grasp, especially for a textbook, as compared to a one colour layout like a book with black print all over.

Its a photocopy...

I recently bought this book from Amazon (Mar 2011). Nowhere among the information available at Amazon did it indicate that the book is now only printed on demand in a photocopiable format (advice from the publisher), ie it is a bound photocopy of the original. I was quite surprised and disappointed.

The other reviews on the Amazon website are some years old and positive feedback re the quality of the printing and colour must relate to the original publication.

The content seems to be as I would have expected, but I objected strongly to Amazon re paying $90 for a photocopy. They were quick to offer a $30 refund. I kept the book to avoid hassle sending it back and I needed the info, but in hindsight I would look at other options rather than paying even $60 for a photocopy.

Good book for Engineers looking to understand MCNP

This book takes some time to work through and understand the examples. If you are willing to take the time and get your hands dirty with the programming you will finish this book with a very good foundation in Engineering software using Fortran.

About the Author

William J. Germann studied chemistry as an undergraduate at Kenyon College and went on to earn a Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Michigan. Among other biology courses, Bill currently teaches three undergraduate human physiology courses at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. Part of his work at the University consists of advising pre-medical students. Bill was recently appointed chair of the Biology Department. He is a member of the Biophysical Society, the American Association of University Professors, and the Texas Association of Advisors for Health Professions.

Cindy L. Stanfield earned both a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Physiology at the University of California at Davis. She teaches physiology to undergraduates at the University of South Alabama, where she has published numerous papers in neurophysiology. Cindy is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, Sigma Xi, and the Golden Key Honor Society.

Easily the best

Ignore what your classmates, kaplan, PASS and the professor say - skip the terribly mediocre and incomprehensible Guyton and Berne and Levy and pick Germann up. This is EASILY the best physio book out there. The software package alone will get you through the toughest of concepts. This is one of the best-written textbooks on any subject out there and it makes learning about the human body, with its fantastic images and awesome explanations, fun and memorable.

Wanna understand human body functions?

Great book to read for better understanding of human body functions. There are good and colorful illustrations in it. Through the guided illustrations and simplified physiological explanations, it makes easier to connect the function of one part of the body to the other.
Well I made good grade on my exam in anatomy and physiology anyhow ... so I can say that this book helped me a lot.

About the Author

Sally Van Doren's first book, Sex at Noon Taxes, received the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. She has taught in the St. Louis Public Schools and curates the Sunday Poetry Series for the St. Louis Poetry Center.

To have a book that has excerpted the best of the best of the photographic artistry of Dylan Rosser, images that have been previously part the highly successful monographs of the male nude - RED, X-POSED, NAKED - seems like the finest gift around. His images are so excellent and so sensual that it is best to be reminded or the credentials of the artist.

Originally from South Africa, Dylan Rosser started his career in the graphic design field, working on various lifestyle magazines in Cape Town. Starting out as a Junior Designer, he worked his way up to Art Director before moving to London in 1998. It was this move that brought about his change in direction, although his graphic design background still shows through in his work today. His work, featuring models from the UK as well as abroad, focuses on the sculptural beauty of the male form. Working with light and shadow, his style brings out the athleticism and sensuality of his subjects.

A fellow colleague of his, a gifted artist also, Rick Day has said the following: `I first met Dylan back in 2008. It was my first time shooting another photographer so I was a bit nervous. When Dylan arrived at my studio, all my nervous energy dissipated. He was not only quite handsome but genuine. I was working on my first book for Bruno Gmünder and was not really familiar with a lot of the photographers on their roster. Since our first encounter I have been following Dylan's work and am always amazed at his attention to detail as well as his ability to find such nice subject matter. I love that I am writing for this book Naked, because when I think of Dylan's work, the last thing I think about is clothing. Dylan dresses his models in beautiful lighting and often times presents those in an almost sterile environment yet bathing them in richly saturated color. His images are stark, erotic and effortless ... and trust me ... that is a talent within itself. I am honored to call him my friend and I look forward to seeing where he takes us next.'
