If you can't make it to Broadway...

After falling in love with "The Book of Mormon" soundtrack I wanted to know more about the story and since I can't exactly afford a trip to NYC to see the show (not that i could get a ticket) the book was the next best thing.

The book in includes a forward by Mark Harris, authors notes from each of the three authors, production history, a list of scenes and song titles and, finally, the complete script with song lyrics. The pages are nice and glossy with colorful accents and small photos from production throughout the script.

The script itself is brilliant. I think the review from Hollywood Reporter by David Rooney says it best:

"The show manages to have a comic field day with Mormonism while simultaneously acknowledging - maybe even respecting - the right of everyone to follow any faith they choose. Or invent."

I can't recommend this enough, if you like the soundtrack, or are curious to see what all the fuss is about and can't see the show itself this book is the perfect way to experience and enjoy "The Book of Mormon".

The PERFECT companion to the Cast Recording

If you love The Book of Mormon, this is definitely a book you need to pick up. It's the complete libretto along with pictures of the cast and even close up shots of some of the fun props and costumes used in the production. The actual book of the show is hilarious and has a lot more heart than what you get from the CD. Hands down the Best Musical Libretto I've seen for sale in a good long while.

Best script I have read of a musical in YEARS!

I was not expecting how amazing the quality of the writting would be from a Trey Parker and Matt Stone musical. Wow....the lyrics are so clever and the writing is nothing short of fantastic. I just bought tickets to go see this show in October cause they are sold out for MONTHS!!!! If you want a taste of this musical, get a copy of this script and soundtrack and enjoy!

Not Much Here

Save your money. More than half of this book consists of "practice" texts--and, of course, you can practice on any book you happen to be reading.
There are a *few* useful exercises, which include reading two lines at once, then 5, then whole paragraphs, then whole pages. You can't read like this for comprehension; the authors have you do it to get used to scanning segments of text at once , rather than single words. Another exercise has you read for one minute for comprehension, another minute at double that speed, and another minute at triple. These exercises DO help, but as far as speed reading instruction goes, that's it. Really.
There is also some very basic instruction on memory-enhancement techniques, nutrition, posture, previewing texts, and so forth--standard stuff.
In short, this book is a waste of money. Tony Buzan's book "Speed Reading" is far better. Some of the older speed reading books offer far more in the way practical instruction than this book does. "Double Your Reading Speed," published in 1964 by The Reading Laboratory, comes to mind.

This book really didn't accomplish what it set out to do. It started off with the claim that the reader will not only read faster, but that reading comprehension will increase. The only real speed reading excercises are for viewing (not reading, as the book says) large chunks of text quickly. But it ends there. There are no tips about comprehending material while viewing it quickly. There are tips for memory retention and classic conditiong for relaxation (both of which you can find in an Intro to Psych class), as well as smart ways of how to read texts (look at charts, topic sentences, etc...), but nothing about understanding the chunks of text we are "viewing" quickly. I admit that after doing these dizzying excercises, my regular reading for comprehension increased in speed a little bit. However, it is still not up to the rate I would consider "speed reading."

Final Verdict: If you really want it, check it out at the library or buy it used. But look for a better book first.

Disappointing

This book is a real disappointment. There's very little actual helpful material to improve your reading speed. Moreover, it hardly covers sub-vocalization, which is a mayor factor inhibiting your readingspeed. The hand exercises are silly and will not increase your speed. A large and useless part of the book only covers texts for practising, like you can't practise on any other texts... Buy another book.

About the Author
C. Michael Bowers is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. He is also the Deputy Medical Examiner in Ventura, California. Dr. Bowers is a practicing forensic dentist and consultant who has testified and worked on hundreds of cases where dental evidence has been involved. He is a former Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology, a Senior Crime Scene Analyst for the International Association for Identification (IAI) and has written other articles, chapters and books on forensic dentistry. He owns and operates his own dental practice in Ventura, CA.

The text includes a thorough overview of what a prospective expert should be aware of regarding the legal system and how forensic evidence should be prepared for courtroom presentation. The chapters cover topics such as the admissibility of forensic expert evidence, character traits of expert witnesses, voir dire and direct examination of the expert, cross examination - the expert’s challenge and the lawyer’s strategies. The text also includes an insightful exploration into the science behind forensic science, ethics and forensic expert failures.
The content is well organized and easy to follow. In twelve chapters Dr. Bowers and his co-authors Dr. Mark Page, Mr. Brent Turvey, and Ms. Wendy Koen present information with clear and concise descriptions. The book opens with a reprint of an interesting presentation given by the Honorable Harry T. Edwards – The National Academy of Science Report on Forensic Sciences: What it Means for the Bench and Bar. The first chapter gives the history of English common law and as the title implies, provides advice for the beginning expert.
Chapter 2 explains science as it pertains to forensic science. It explains concepts in a manner that is easy to understand. In Chapter 3 admissibility of expert evidence is discussed. Included is a necessary background of important cases that have contributed to admissibility. The next chapter illustrates forensic expert practice.
Chapter 5 describes how to mange a forensic case, case preparation and how to speak with attorneys. Chapter 6 follows on from this with good and bad traits of expert witnesses, listing what to do and what not to do. Chapter 7 deals with becoming qualified as an expert as well as what to expect with direct examination and Chapter 8 focuses on cross examination.
Chapter 9 resumes with a scientific principal that all experts should be aware of namely uniqueness and individualization in forensic science. The book wraps up with the cases of forensic failures, ethics, and the power entailed in expert testimony.
Most chapters conclude with a box entitled - Innocence Blog- which highlights a case of wrongful conviction. In conclusion, this book is a useful reference and a great addition to any collection of forensic texts.

A must read book for people in the forensic jobs!

Everyone watches CSI and forensic related TV series, fake. This is the real information, the science and the expert evidence. Described why certain cases go wrong. And the responsibility of an expert witness. This book opens up my mind and allows me to understand certain legal cases from a different perspective. A great book to have.
