Focusing on one special word each day is very helpful since life always seems to get in the way of my quiet time, even though I do get up early in order to do my devotional reading, Scripture passages, too, and a prayer time before my day gets rolling along. Am enjoying Pauses for Lent very much.

Fantastic book with every Marvel character you can imagine!

This is a fantastic book and was a huge hit with my 8 year old son. He LOVES it! He has another character collection book (Marvel the Avengers - The Ultimate Character Guide) that is tiny in comparison. I'm not a Marvel expert by any stretch of the imagination but I can't imagine any characters that aren’t in here. It has everything...heroes, villians, groups of heroes, groups of villians, “ages” (i.e. Age of Ultron).

For each character, there is an information box that they call a “Factfile”. In the Factfile, they have the characters “real” name (think Peter Parker for Spiderman), their occupation, the location of their base, height, weight, eye color, powers, allies, foes and when they first appeared in the Marvel Comics (Comic name and year) Here is a tiny sampling of what is in the book: A-Bomb, Abomination, Abraxas, Absalon, Absorbing Man, Abyss, Achilles, Acolytes, Action Pack, Acts of Vengeance, Adam-2, Adversary, Aegis, Aero, Aftershock, Agamemnon, Agency X, Agent Axis, Agents of Atlas, Agent X, Agent Zero, Age of Apocalypse, Age of Ultron, Age of X, Agony, Ahab, AIM, Air-Walker, Ajak, Ajax, Albion, Alephs, Aleta, Liz Allan, Alliance of Evil, All-Winners Squad, Alpha, Alpha Flight, Alpha-Stone, Marlene Alraune, Alter Ego, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, Amazons, American Dream, American Eagle, Amphibian, Anachronauts, Anaconda, Anarchist, Ancient One, Andromeda, A-Next, Angar, Angel, Angela, Dirk Anger...and that is just 1/4 of the A’s! It is crazy!

For some of the minor characters, there are multiple characters on one page. There is more space dedicated to the major characters. Spiderman, for example, has 4 pages dedicated to him. One of the pictures attached to this review shows one of the pages as an example.

The characters are all in alphabetical order so between that and a very detailed index (there is a picture attached of one page of the index as an example), it is really easy to find specific characters. If you have a question about whether a specific character is in the book, you can comment below and I will look for you.

If nothing else, the book would make a great weapon. It is huge! It is 439 pages

Awesome book

I received the book the very next afternoon. A need for any Marvel comic book lover. Vast amounts of background stories on the favorites. They have updated some of the pictures and added more to the stories. Even if you own the old Encyclopedia this is a must have

If you're an amateur comic book enthusiast like me then this book is great. It covers quite a few characters and events in the Marvel Universe and the entries vary in length depending on their popularity. This ends up being one of the book's drawbacks too since in the years after the book's publication various characters have gained in popularity yet the book may only contain a brief description for them due to their relative obscurity at the time (Deadpool for example).

Despite its rapid obsolescence and the numerous editing errors which other reviewers have already pointed out, this character encyclopedia is a wonderful coffee table book that will spark conversations and occupy guests for hours. True fanatics may find the book lacking, but it's not meant to be exhaustive. It's a quick-reference conversational piece, and for the beginner or amateur comic book fan a handy educational tool. It's certainly worthy of a place on the living room end table beside the AD&D Monster Manual

Great Little Compact Guide

This little guide of Copenhagen got me all around the great city of Denmark without incident. Well, without bad incidents, anyway. This is the way a guidebook should be done. It covers all the great sights in the city and is full of photos and tips.

Having read this guide, I was able to explore Copenhagen and see countless great things in a short period of time. The map is useful as well. The photos are small but beautiful.

My only quibble is I would have liked to have had more information on how to pronounce Danish words. Yes, most locals speak perfect English, but it helps to know how to pronounce streets and place names when navigating with a taxi driver or on a bike. Also ordering food, it would be nice to have a cursory knowledge of how things are pronounced.

The guide is a little light on hotels and restaurants- but I like my guides that way- as I think hotels and restaurants change too quickly to be in books and are more accurately researched on the internet.

Great little guide for Copenhagen- almost perfect.

Best Copenhagen guidebook but still problems

Our family had a long weekend in Copenhagen. We got had 4 guidebooks to the city or the country -- this, DK, LP, and Wallpaper. (Funny that this, DK, and LP all have essentially the identical cover photo of Nyhavn.) This is by far the best book of the four -- most informative, most useful format, best written. But it did not always steer us right. Page 10 recommends the Soren K as a great restaurant for families, citing its combination of "casual food for kids (and champagne and oysters for parents)", This combination totally appealed to us, and we dragged our tired selves across town for it. Unfortunately, there was no casual food for kids, and no oysters. A fine restaurant, but not what we were expecting from the book, nor what we were seeking. So be a bit wary of this book.

Tomislav Tomic, Engraver: Tomislav Tomic was born in Zagreb, Croatia, in 1977. After graduating from Zagreb's Academy of Fine Arts in 2001, he started working as an illustrator. Since then, he has produced cover illustrations for numerous books and has also illustrated pieces for magazines. His black and white engravings for WIZARDOLOGY are his first for an American publisher, but no doubt more will follow!

Helen Ward, Artist: Helen Ward trained as an illustrator at Brighton School of Art, under the direction of well-known children's illustrators such as Raymond Briggs, Justin Todd, Chris McEwan and John Vernon Lord. In 1985, her final year at Brighton, Helen was awarded the first Walker Prize for Children's Illustration. WIZARDOLOGY is the third "Ology" title to which Helen has contributed her art. Her illustrations include the fabulous Wizard Master's Workshop in Chapter III and the black and white woodcuts seen throughout the book.

Not quite what we expected...but okay

I guess we didn't read the description well enough, and just went by the product name - my daughter was expecting more of a "how to create codes" book and not a stationery set. There are examples of three codes that she did try, and enjoyed. I am hoping she takes advantage of the very cool writing paper and sends some letters (in code, of course!) to her friends.

Don't reinvent the wheel!

I have been using these materials to aid me if full time Kurdish learning for the past couple years. I love them! For learning Behdini Kurdish they are the best on the market! In fact, I have not even been able to find any Behdini Kurdish resources besides this course. Every book in the series is packed full of resources that will help you learn the language accurately and efficiently.

I especially appreciate the Categories of Vocabulary because it allows me to learn groupings of words. In my studies if I wanted to focus on, for example, kitchen words, I would just open the purple book to the kitchen section. It saved me so much time not having to look up every individual word I wanted to know in the dictionary.

The Exercises in Behdini Grammar book is such a life saver! It saved me from having to reinvent the wheel. For the most part the average Kurd does not have knowledge of Kurdish grammar as their school instruction had been in Arabic. My Kurdish language helpers, though amazing, could not explain to me the grammar. Without this grammar book my language learning would have been so painful! Don't reinvent the wheel! Get this book! Get the whole series!

Books A and B are gold mines! They are chock full of Kurdish phrases, cultural questions, proverbs and stories. I find that the best way to learn language is to learn phrase by phrase rather than word for word. Having books A and B teaches Kurdish phrases that I could never logically piece together using my American culture and a dictionary. Lately in my language learning I have been focusing on "The Stories told in Kurdistan," to teach myself grammar, new vocabulary, pronunciation and phrases. First I read the story provided. Then I listen to the story using the audio recordings. (I listen while I drive in the car. So helpful!) After listening several times I memorize the story. Then I try to tell the story to my language helper. While telling her the story I record myself and then play it back so my language helper can make corrections. Much later I might forget the story but what sticks with me are phrases that are forever burned in mind as well as the new vocabulary I learned and used. I noticed that even doing this one time immediately improved my speaking skills.

A constant resource that I have always at my side is the Behdini Grammar Reference Cards. At only 7 pages long it is short and sweet and is exactly what it's name suggests; a quick reference. One chart in particular has made my life so much easier. The Verb Endings/ Tenses chart has all the tenses of the Kurdish language on one chart! Countless times I have referred to this chart while in still in conversation so I would be able to correctly and quickly conjugate my verbs to make myself understood. In one word, it is beautiful!

Even my Kurdish Language helpers are constantly amazed at what comes out of Cherie's books. They always say, "I think she knows more Kurdish than I do." Save yourself the time and energy from trying to figure out the Kurdish language all on your own and buy these books! I would have been up the creek without a paddle without them!

Great Kurdish language learning resources for serious language learners.

I used these materials when they were first being published about 20 years ago and have had good success in my language learning. I worked with a private language helper and also did a lot of studies on my own in addition to visiting Kurdish friends so that I could practice what I was learning.

The grammar book includes a lot of vocabulary and reading/story exercises in addition to grammar exercises. The yellow dictionary has a lot of user-friendly example sentences. The purple dictionary organizes the vocabulary by category (e.g., fruit), which made memorizing the words helpful. Book A has a lot of practical pronunciation, listening, speaking, and conversation ideas and activities. The grammar overview and stories in Book B were especially appealing to my style of language learning. The audio recordings weren't recorded in a sound-proof recording studio (LOL!) but the variety of native speakers' voices is helpful. The sentence structure cards and vocabulary flash cards were published after I had already learned Kurdish, but they would probably be helpful, too.

The whole course is in the Latin/Roman script (similar to English), but there is a section in Book B that shows you how to read and write in the Kurdish script (which is similar to Farsi or Arabic). I worked with a Kurdish friend to learn to write and then later taught myself to read by reading simple documents and books.

this course is very clearly structured and with clear instructions for you to study alone or with others. I used it from beginning to end and in that 6 - 8 months I achieved a comfortable ability to converse with kurdish speakers who were delighted that I had learnt to speak to them in their own language. 4 years later I still refer to it for vocabulary and for the harder everyday verb forms because it is so clearly presented.
