During ten manned flights in 1965 and 1966, astronauts would perform spacewalks, rendezvous with orbiting vehicles using maneuvering and propulsion systems, and perform docking tests. A great deal of experience was gained and equipment tested, and with one exception - a dry land capsule landing - all of the planned objectives were met. All ten manned flights were made using Titan II two-stage boosters that were purpose-built for Gemini and known as "GLV" or Gemini-Titans. The prime contractor for the Mercury capsule McDonnell Aircraft, constructed the two-man Gemini capsule. A larger, more sophisticated spacecraft than Mercury, the Gemini capsule relied on a detachable Equipment Module for power, propulsion, and life-support systems. The capsule itself was outfitted with ejection seats, carried an on-board Guidance Computer, and could be flown in six directions. Created by NASA and contractor McDonnell Aircraft, this Familiarization Manual explains all the systems aboard the Mercury space capsule including cabin controls, sequence, electrical power, cooling, guidance and control, communications, retrograde rocket, and landing systems and procedures. Dating from September of 1965 for the long range and extended missions, it represents a late revision of documents created at the beginning of the Gemini program. Originally restricted, this manual has been declassified and is presented in its entirety, running nearly 600 pages.

Good but also disappointing

This book is "just" a reprint of the Gemini Program manual with the same title (SEDR 300, 20 SEP 1965) for the Long Range and Modified Configurations of the Gemini Spacecraft. It should be immediately noted that there is also another version of the manual for the Rendezvous and Docking Configurations that has a few chapters more devoted to docking mechanisms, Agena, and EVA equipment.
This said, the fact that the book is just a reprint of something easily available on the Internet, is not bad, because a well printed and bounded copy of this extensive manual is very handy for people very interested in the subject: with this book you do not need many other references to be knowledgeable on Gemini.
The problem is that the book misses the whole Section 8 (about 290 pages long) devoted to Guidance and Control System, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Gemini missions: the first rendezvous missions, the first orbital maneuvers, the first computer in space (manned S/C) and so on. Without that section the book is really lacking the heart of the Gemini S/C.
The section is missing because originally provided in a classified annex to the manual, an annex that has been declassified aeons ago and that is also readily available on the Internet. How disappointing if you hoped to have everything concentrated in a single book. I wish the publishers start thinking about producing the annex as a separate book, which will be in the end a good thing so that topic is left separate also for a more easy handling.
Another disappointment has been the treatment of foldouts (typical in this kind of manuals). In certain cases the foldouts have been shrinked, n other cases have been split into separate pages. While the treatment of split foldouts is very intelligent (with plenty of overlap between adjacent pages) those shrinked are more often than note unreadable.
I am a bit undecided if to return the item or not because it fails to deliver the advantages of a printed version versus the electronic versions available elsewhere (for free).

Clean printing of thorough NASA Gemini manual

This is very nice capture of the Gemini Familiarization Manual for the Long-Duration missions. It's a complete, very clean copy of the NASA document, which was and is a thorough description of the spacecraft from top to bottom. It is imperative, however, that the publisher also make available the "section 8" companion volume of the Familiarization Manual, as well as the version of the manual for the Rendezvous missions. Otherwise, their treatment of this subject is woefully incomplete.

This book is top-notch. An outstanding gathering of historic NASA documants in a bound text that allows the reader to review the nuts and bolts of the Gemini vehicle. It is an outstanding addition to my collection and spaceflight library.

WARNING - NOT FOR GUITAR

This book is for drum tablature, NOT guitar tablature (The one that is listed for $10-$11). I made this mistake, do not do the same unless you want music for drums.

must have for Hendrix fans

If you are a Hendrix fan this is definitely a book to have.I question wheter some of the written vocal melodies are accurate but the guitar and bass transcriptions are pretty good and can take you deep into rainbow realms of Jimi`s genius.

Execellent Tab!! You'll be playing Purple Haze in no time

This is a fantastic guitar tab book. I wish I had this book back when I was 12 and first started playing guitar. The only reason I play guitar is because when I was 12, I was at Camelot Music in the mall and bought Are You Experienced? on cassette(back in the day before CD's fazed out cassettes.) It was summer vacation and I had nothing better to do so I listened to Are You Experienced? for one week. After that time I had to get a guitar. I started on a old beat up acoustic and quickly moved to a Kramer electric. Then I started taking music lessons. I would bring in my cassette and asked the guitar teacher how to play the solo in Hey Joe. I learned it note-for-note. Its a good solo to start with. A lot of the basic guitar techniques are all in Hey Joe. I was a beginner when I learned it and it wasn't that difficult. The problem I had was guitar teachers don't like to spend the time teaching you an entire song in 30-minute blocks. You just don't have the time for it. So, as a result, you only learn one riff or one part of a solo. I like learning songs from beginning to end. That's why this tab book is great. For those new to tab, the last few pages have a how to learn to read tab section. Plus, unlike some guitar tab books, this one includes the actual music notes. Some of the magazines and other tab books only have tab, which is fine if you are only using it to play guitar on but it doesn't help other musicians. I asked my friend, who plays piano, to play Purple Haze just to hear the guitar licks on piano. It sounded interesting. Anyway, if I had this book back when I was 12, I would have learned all the songs faster. Tab is very easy to learn and should take about 5-minutes or less. Its not that hard to figure out. All the tabs sound great. I play a white Fender strat through a Peavy Rage amp and a Jim Dunlap Crybaby Wah Wah pedal. I use the gain from the amp and the fuzz setting from the Wah pedal. I get a great Hendrix sound just from that simple set up. Anyway, regradless of where you are at in your own guitar playing, pick up this book to take you to the next level.

About the Author
Jeff Galloway is the designer of the Run-Walk-Run low mileage marathon training program, a Runner's World columnist, and an inspirational speaker for more than 200 running and fitness sessions each year. Jeff has worked with hundreds of thousands of runners including participants of run Disney events for which he provides training programs, tips and videos.

Barbara Galloway has been a serious runner for years and was on the Florida State women's track team. Barbara runs practically every day and has competed in over 30 marathons. Her best 10K time is 41:50, and marathon time 3:18. She has a master's degree in physical educatin and conducts running clinics during running vacation retreats at Lake Tahoe and Athens, Greece.

This book is definitely for beginners. If you are serious runner looking to improve this book is not for you. If you are a couch potato looking to start running. Great Book! This book was not for me.

great for beginner!

At 50 years old and out of shape, I walked a 5K and fell in love with it. A friend turned me on to Jeff Galloway. This book especially for women was exactly what I was looking for! Lots of great information, tips, and inspiration. I hated running when I was in college. If I'd known about the run-walk-run, I'd probably have stuck with it. I have horrible knees - or so I thought. Since I've been following the recommendations in this book, my knees have never felt better. If you want to get up off the couch and start earning finisher medals, start with this book!

About the Author

Rodney H. Jones is Professor of English at City University of Hong Kong. His main research interests include discourse analysis, health communication and language and sexuality. His books include Discourse in Action: introducing mediated discourse analysis (edited with Sigrid Norris, Routledge, 2005), Understanding Digital Literacies: a practical introduction (with Christoph Hafner, Routledge, 2012), and Health and Risk Communication: an applied linguistic perspective (Routledge, 2013).

Alice Chik is Senior Lecturer in The School of Education at Macquarie University. Her main research areas include narrative inquiry, literacy, and popular culture in language education. She is the co-editor of Popular Culture, Pedagogy and Teacher Education: international perspectives (Routledge, 2014).

Christoph A. Hafner is Assistant Professor in the Department of English, City University of Hong Kong. His research interests include specialized discourse, digital literacies and language learning and technology. More than just a cookbook!

This is a cookbook with a difference - as well as pages of enticing recipes this book gives a great insight into all that is this unique place! Makes you want to jump on the next plane to NO and savour all the delights it has to offer! I literally could not put this book down the first night I got it. Look forward to working my way through these tasty pages of pure indulgence. Us Europeans could learn alot from worshipping a Bible like this :) Highly Recommended! Well done Mr. Elie. Look forward to more from you.

Fried Chicken, Gumbo and More!

First, I must confess that Mr. Elie has been a very dear friend for over 30 years, so this review is not without its biases. Second, I must also confess that he is one of the best cooks I know personally, and has chosen recipes for this cookbook that will satisfy the most demanding palates.

I have not only read the book and enjoyed it tremendously, but was also in New Orleans to taste the Korean chicken dish created by Chef Jackie (Jacqueline Blanchard, Executive Sous Chef at Restaurant August). Oops! I'm not sure I was supposed to give that secret away. Well, if you purchase the book and read it you will be given the impression that the recipes were created by the characters. But the truth is, the recipes are all from world class chefs like Chef Jackie in N.O., and people who have set the standard for New Orleans cuisine in their home kitchens. This really was the best chicken I have ever had in my entire life and was so light and crispy it could have flew off of plate and taken flight into fried chicken heaven. What a treat that was.

Another inside secret I will share is that Lolis got the Gumbo recipe from his mother. I hope he doesn't read this review, but I just couldn't keep that one to myself. I had the opportunity to have his mother's Gumbo just last month and what an experience that was. She is a living Gumbo legend!

So that's a bit of the inside scoop on the cook book. Bottom line is you can't go wrong for the recipes, and if you enjoy a good read, you will enjoy this one.

So now the pitch for my friend Lolis, which includes my bias. Buy a book for yourself and ten more as Christmas gifts. It may not be the best thing if you have a heart condition, but it will most certainly increase the happiness quotient of us mere Earthlings!

The history, food, and music are what draw me to New Orleans. This covers two of the topics in a well executed manner. This is one of the books that sits out, not buried in the shelf.

Honestly, I don't know why there is still no review. It is one of the most hillarious yet profound little books. I love every bit of it both for an easy way the writer makes fun of philosophers and also for deep and important questions he leaves you with.
