QuickBooks: To use or not to use

As CPA specializing in providing services to Non-profit organizations, I felt I'd better get, read, and study this book as it has other outstanding reviews. I'm currently only into Chapter 2 (I read the entire appendix first as suggested by the author) and the information and layout are remarkable and with the update, timely.

For most of my clients there is no question, they will continue to use QuickBooks and the road to better bookkeeping will be one step at a time. These are the clients that will benefit the most from my purchase of this book and I will be recommending each of them purchase their own copy.

The other undecided or willing to change clients may after reading chapter 1 of the book, will decide not to use QuickBooks at all. The first chapter is 12 pages of areas that QuickBooks falls short for Non-profit accounting. There are work arounds for most issues, but others require exporting the reports to Excel and then customizing the reports manually.

So, in summary, the book is great; however, it may make you question your decision to use QuickBooks in the first place.

An invaluable aid for anyone using QuickBooks for non-profits

I could not find this topic in the "Dummies" series (my first move when I get into something new), but am I glad I found this. As a new board treasurer for a small non-profit ($110k), this was invaluable. Our books ("QB for Non-Profits Premier") were a jumble due to multiple treasurers and bookkeepers in the last five years or more. I am not a bookkeeper or accountant, but I am good with numbers and logic (I'm an engineer) and have reviewed many financial reports. The appendix on accounting requirements for non-profits was invaluable to me (and is required reading for all board members). I sat down to get started in my new job as treasurer with our accountant who works with many non-profits; she is planning to buy the book!

A must have for bookkeepers, treasurers and accountants (ok,I'm presuming) using QB for their non-profit organization.

A Big Help!

I'm not a CPA, but have been helping out small non-profit organizations for a long time, doing bookkeeping. I'm a long time user of for profit versions of QuickBooks and feel comfortable with a 990 form. However, the new nonprofit version of QuickBooks totally flummoxed me! I spent days surfing online for answers to the QuickBooks problems and finally broke down and contacted a QB Certified Advisor at a local CPA's office. Turns out she didn't even know that there was a separate nonprofit version and she couldn't solve my problems. That made me feel a little better, but I was still very frustrated and feeling as if my bookkeeping skills were not so hot.

This book helped me regain my self-esteem. I got a big grin on my face every time the author said, "QuickBooks doesn't do this task right and here is how you can get around it." Whew! What a big help. I still have issues with QB that this book won't solve, but our situation (needing to do inventory too) is a bit different from most nonprofits. Otherwise, this book is very easy to understand and very helpful. I would definitely recommend it.

Best survey of Western Philosophy ever!

Baker and Bonjour lead you step-by-step through a survey of western-tradition analytical philosophy, full of humor and insight, excellent primary sources, and unbelievably lucid commentary. Their method is very accessible, and even a raw beginner can quickly find him/herself immersed in philosophical inquiry without feeling lost. They take a topic the average American finds very esoteric, and show not only how relevant it is, but how anyone can do it. An excellent choice for someone who wants to get a grip on philosophy but feels daunted by traditional approaches, or wants to learn on their own.

Quinn Was Haunted By Ghosts

Anthony Quinn was a great actor as well as an excellent visual artist, writer and not very good professional boxer in his youth. He had his problems, most of which were psychological. He didn't believe in death and was haunted by ghosts throughout his long life. He even carried on conversations with those ghosts. His most frequent ghostly visitor was "Boy" who was the embodiment of his own youth. He argued constantly with "Boy" about whether he had achieved his true purpose in life. The "Boy" kept Anthony "relativity sane" by always reminding him of the truth and mocking him when the actor/artist began to believe his own legend. Quinn was also a driven man. He spent his life seeking the perfect love of a woman; a woman for whom he would the first, last and only man in her life. Even his loving mother and grandmother both of whom literally worshipped the ground he walked upon, failed to meet Quinn's standards because of course they had both shared their love with men other than Quinn (his grandfather and father to be specific).
Quinn opens this autobiography with a lengthy session with his psychoanalyst. This is the same vehicle he uses to tie the various parts of his life story together. It's all rather depressing because of this clinical approach. Quinn had a fabulous and interesting life that started with his birth in a mud-floored hut in Mexico while his father was fighting with Poncho Villa in the Mexican Revolution. His mother had been fighting at his side on the front lines until her pregnancy had resulted in her being sent home to have her baby.
Because he grew into a famous movie star, the book is fascinating with lots of Hollywood reference points. I happened to have read Quinn's second autobiography "One Man Tango" before I discovered this one. The second autobiography is so good that I decided to read this one to see if had additional information about the actor's life. It did, but it was of a mostly depressing nature. If you only read one of Quinn's autobiographies "One Man Tango" is far better. It was written shortly before his death and the writer was a much older and wiser man. He was still haunted by his ghosts, especially "Boy" who he encountered even while taking his daylong bicycle trips around the hills of his Italian villa.
Reading this book will give the reader a peek at the great actors driving forces as well as his demons, but it will also leave the reader depressed. When I found that Quinn had written two autobiographies I thought that fact a bit odd, but it's easy to see why he did the second one. This one only scratches the surface and subsurface of his character. This volume is good for additional information, but "One Man Tango" is infinitely superior in every way, not the least of which is it was published in 1997 a year after the birth of his thirteenth child when Quinn was a senior, senior citizen (age 82), but barely willing to acknowledge it. When one realizes all the baggage Quinn was carrying it amazing he was able to accomplish anything. Quinn was a true larger-than-life Mexican-American success story and he wouldn't let you forget that fact. He was tireless in his 86-year search for the perfect love of a woman, and his search involved bedding the most beautiful women in Hollywood and the rest of the world. He wanted to make love to and impregnate every woman in the world. He was a vigorous, randy man with an unquenchable thirst and a posse of real ghosts. A good read, but there are better ones. Quinn believed "the inability to accept love is 'the original sin', sadder than all others." He believed that in life and art he had to keep moving forward or he would surely die and join the members of his ghostly entourage without ever having found or accepted true love.

Quinn isn't an actor you think of first when you think of Hollywood. But his trip from Mexico, emotional development and gambles with legends of the studio system make for entertaining reading.
Nice anecdotes and insights into the minds and egos of some of the great names of yesteryear.

I enjoyed the read. He had a true rags to riches story but needed therapy to fix himself. By the way...If you want to know what he considered the original sin, it's on page 107.

I wonder if book sales covered his therapy bills? :-)

Many mispellings

I was hoping this was going to be a one-source book for a lot of the tech questions. It does have a lot of information, but was not edited very well at all. When I first got the book, I just thumbed it open to the middle somewhere to see what it said. The page was describing tire 'chimes'. They're not chimes, they're CHINES. Ugh. Also, it talks about the 'chamber' of the wing. I've been flying for over twenty years and I've never seen the CAMBER of the wing listed as 'chamber'. Just poor editing and spell-checking. It could be detrimental to somebody that didn't know. Makes me wonder what is incorrect that I don't know about.

Improved, but not enough

This edition has improved over the last edition. Some answers have been corrected. However, there are still some answers that are clearly wrong and this reflect fundamental misconception of the author. For example, the notorious "dutch roll" explanation in the first edition has been re-written, the initial part is mostly correct until the author wrote "a marked bank occurs to the point where the outer,upward wing exceeds its critical angle of attack, stalls and lose all lift". Firstly, in Dutch roll the airplane roll back to level position not because the upward wing is stalled, it's because the plane has lateral stability that is TOO GOOD. Secondly, an up-going wing actually will have a SMALLER angle of attack as the relative airflow to the up-going wing has a downward component in it. This example shows the author lack of understanding in this particular area.

Still, I must give the author a fairer comment as this book has covered a lot of different aspects in great details despite some consistent annoying typos (e.g. camber => chamber throughout) and occasional overly complicated explanation. I would recommend you to buy this book but do your own research when you are doubtful about the answers and be careful when you quote it. In short, this is definitely a great preparatory book for any technical interview. But for a second edition, i would expect more, at least better proof-reading.

India in the Shadows of Empire explains the postcolonial Indian polity by presenting an alternative historical narrative of the British Empire in India and India's struggle for independence. It pursues this narrative along two major trajectories. On the one hand, it focuses on the role of imperial judicial institutions and practices in the making of both the British Empire and the anti-colonial movement under the Congress, with the lawyer as political leader. On the other hand, it offers a novel interpretation of Gandhi's non-violent resistance movement as being different from the Congress. It shows that the Gandhian movement, as the most powerful force largely responsible for India's independence, was anchored not in western discourses of political and legislative freedom but rather in Indic traditions of renunciative freedom, with the renouncer as leader.

This volume offers a comprehensive and new reinterpretation of the Indian Constitution in the light of this historical narrative. India in the Shadows of Empire contends that the British colonial idea of justice and the Gandhian ethos of resistance have been the two competing and conflicting driving forces that have determined the nature and evolution of the Indian polity after independence.
