The Judaeo-Christian tradition has been held partly to blame for a negative attitude to creation - one that has legitimised the exploitative use of the earth's resources. Hilary Marlow explores some of the thinking in the history of the Christian tradition that has contributed to such a perception, before discussing a number of approaches to reading the Old Testament from an ecological perspective.

Through a detailed exegetical study of the texts of the biblical prophets Amos, Hosea, and First Isaiah, Marlow examines the portrayal of the relationship between YHWH the God of Israel, humanity and the non-human creation. In the course of this exegesis, searching questions emerge: what are the various understandings of the non-human creation that are present in the text? What assumptions are made about YHWH's relationship to the created world and how he acts within it? And what effect do the actions and choices of human beings have on the created world?

Following this close textual study, Marlow examines the problem of deriving ethical norms from the biblical text and discusses some key ethical debates in contemporary environmental theory. The book explores the potential contribution of the biblical exegesis to such debates and concludes by proposing an inter-relational model for reading the Old Testament prophets in the light of contemporary environmental ethics.

About the Author

Hilary Marlow is a Research Associate in theology and the environment at the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, St Edmunds College, Cambridge. She also teaches biblical Hebrew to undergraduates in the Faculty of Divinity and sometimes lectures on the biblical prophets for the Cambridge Theological Federation. She completed her doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 2007. This is her first full-length monograph. She has a longstanding and close connection with the Christian environmental charity A Rocha, and is currently on the operations team of the John Ray Initiative.

For what it's worth, a friend of mine said he dug reading it on Kindle, because he could simply tap on any word to get a definition.

"Why don't you have a post-graduate degree, Steve?", some ask. The reason is that I live in Hawaii, where there is quite a leftist bent in higher education. I learned this the hard way while earning my BA in English Literature at U.H. Manoa. When I would challenge the atheist/postmodernist assumptions of some of my professors, they couldn't provide an adequate response, but they dinged my grades. Friends who go to other universities here confirmed that it's the same at those institutions as well. So I made up my mind to do self-directed study, and I've gone way beyond where many PhD's have gone. My conversations with top-shelf thinkers like William Lane Craig have confirmed that I have self-educated my self soundly. No brag; just fact. It needs to be said, because some people perceive a void after my name where they expect a few letters to be.

The 10% who always dis Christian apologetics

This was a thorough book that covered the major topics for affirming the existence of God. Williams used both scientific evidence and philosophy to give the reader a more robust background for supporting the Christian faith. He explained some of the main cosmological arguments, moral arguments, and other topics such as fine-tuning of the universe. The chapter on fine-turning was a listing of 93 fine-tuned features in the universe and no explanation of those fine-tuned characteristics, such as the strong and weak nuclear force constants, gravitational force constant, electromagnetic for constant. As Williams said, "Feel free to skip ahead if you get the gist" of the list. I bought both the Kindle and the Audible whisper-sync versions. Unfortunately, I was listening to the book when this list came up and couldn't skip forward and drive safely. I have heard a couple dozen of these in other books, but some were new to me and I couldn't evaluate their importance in the intelligent design of the universe. It would have been good to expand on a few of them. I know it drives atheists nuts to talk about the number and types of supernova eruptions, especially when it comes to what happened to all the stage III supernovae remnants. If the universe were truly billions of years old, there should be thousands of detectable stage III supernovae remnants but there are none. It takes a over six thousand years for supernova remnants to reach this stage and they should detectably persist for about one million years.

One thing that is noticeable about the ratings of Christian, Intelligent Design, and creationist books is the constant 10% who utterly hate the book and usually attack the writer rather than deal with the arguments and evidence. That 10% correlates well with the polls that have found 10% of our population consists of atheists. If you look at a few books on other subjects, you would expect to see very few 1-star reviews for a good book on woodworking or some other subject that doesn't deal with Christian apologetics and more 3-4 star ratings. Instead, what I often see for Christian/creationist books is a high number of 5-star, a few 4-star, an occasional or rare 3 star, almost never 2-star, and 10% 1-star ratings. Well, at least the strident atheists are consistent in this respect. Usually, many of these detractors haven't actually read the book they criticize, but the ones who have seldom venture out of the 1-star rating for books opposed to their philosophical bent.

Convincing arguments for the existence of God

Convincing arguments about the reality of God. Shows why those who seek the truth such as noted prior atheists such as Sinclair, Flew, McCormack, Strobel, and many others reached the conclusion that God does exist. Arguments are indisputable. Downside is those that are convinced in their disbelief probably won't read the book since they don't want their lifestyle challenged.

Don't harbor any illusions about this book turning your atheist professor around. But it will give you something to think about. Even truth has its inveterate detractors.

About the Author

Tobin Nellhaus is an independent scholar and former Librarian for Performing Arts, Media and Philosophy at Yale University. He writes mainly on the relationship between theatre and communication practices, and on critical realism in theatre historiography.

Bruce McConachie is Chair of Theatre Arts at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also directs and performs. He has published widely in American theatre history, theatre historiography, and performance and cognitive studies, and is a former President of the American Society for Theatre Research. 

Carol Fisher Sorgenfrei is Professor Emerita of Theatre and Performance Studies and former Vice Chair for Graduate Programs at UCLA and former Research Fellow in the Institute for Theatre Studies at Berlin's Free University. She is a scholar, translator, playwright, and director focusing on Japanese and cross-cultural theatre.

Tamara Underiner is Associate Dean for Research for the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University, and director of the Ph.D. program in Theatre and Performance of the Americas.

Mbeki the Man

This is a beast of a book, but nearly every one of the 800 pages is interesting and relevant to modern day South Africa. The parts I found most compelling included the chapters on Mbeki's time in London, his time in Lusaka, and his return (and early sidelining in Johannesburg). This is a terrific read that covers the former South African President better than anything that has been published -- or probably ever will be published. Flaws and all, Mbeki is one of Africa's most important leaders.

Epic, Bloated, Overwritten, Eloquent...

...It's hard to sum up "The Dream Deferred" in a word or two. But whatever else it is, it is THE great South African political biography, a book that must be read by anyone interested in the history of the country. It is eloquent, fascinating and compulsively readable, in spite of its 800-page bulk.

The book succeeds in evoking the mystery and tragedy of Thabo Mbeki, South Africa's brilliant yet failed President. Mbeki was a product of the ANC-in-exile. Groomed by party elders to be a leader of post-apartheid South Africa, Mbeki followed Mandela into the Presidency in 1999, only to be forced from office in 2007/2008 after a humiliating rejection by the ANC. South Africans still debate the causes of his political failure. Was it ego? A mania for power? Racial hyper-sensitivity? A lack of the common touch? The book doesn't answer the question. Its timing couldn't have been worse: conceived at the high point of Mbeki's power and published immediately prior to his downfall, "The Dream Deferred" lacks the benefit of hindsight and is too busy with high-concept literary themes like "exile" and "homecoming" to attend to "small" matters like naked political miscalculation. But even if it doesn't have the last word on Mbeki's career, the book raises great questions and is filled with arresting insights. It's highly recommended.

That said, readers looking for conventional political biography might be disappointed. The book is very much about Mbeki's life, not his times. It is high-brow journalism, not true scholarship. Just when the reader is expecting real history -- about the intricate negotiations to unban the ANC, say, or about the economic policies of post-apartheid South Africa -- the author backs off and delivers long meditations on Mbeki's tortured soul. Some of his interpretive gloss is profound, all of it is interesting -- even when it borders on pop-psychology -- but there is too much of it.

This book should be required reading for all South Africans, particularly those with an interest in the ANC. It illuminates the politicians in a way that assists in understanding their motives and contexts. I could not recommend this book highly enough.

Indispensable guide to functional programming

Lo-Dash/Underscore JavaScript libraries have quickly become essential tools for me at work and this book helped cement my understanding of them in ways that the API docs and scattered web tutorials failed to do. Web Developers who specialize in Backbone have long been familiar with these libraries, but Angular devs like myself are often considerably less aware of how much more elegant and concise their code can become by leveraging these Lo-Dash. Angular does offer many lite versions of the common operations in Lo-Dash (clone, type checking, etc.), and many devs think that's mostly all they would use it for, so they never go much farther with it. But there are significant benefits to be had by exploring Lo-Dash and your code will get a lot cleaner and more compact because of it.

When I used to work in .NET I grew fond of LINQ and quickly got under the skin of old-school .NET developers who fluent APIs, functional programming, lambdas, re-sharper's recommendations for their code, and change in general. When I transitioned into JavaScript I went looking for a way to approach programming tasks similar to LINQ and found it in Underscore/Lo-Dash. That's not to say Lo-Dash is LINQ for JavaScript, but the mindsets are similar, even though the implementations are different.

One of the biggest problems with Lo-Dash/Underscore right now is the lack of solid articles and tutorials online that will bring new lo-dash users to their personal "aha" moments, and this book is the best option for getting there, in my opinion. Lo-Dash can sneak up on you too, where you think you have a good grasp on it, but then you run across a little tidbit from someone's code in stackoverflow that make you realize there's a lot more to it. Method-chaining, Map-Reduce, and using Tap() are all portions of Lo-Dash that are easy to overlook but which this book does a superb job of guiding you through.

The book covers many core JS concepts, like binding, partials, currying, object manipulation, and you might find yourself quickly dependent on the Lo-Dash implementations of these operations to the point where you forget how you used to do those things in naked JS. Also, two chapters are spent covering Map/Reduce ideas and implementations, and for me this was the biggest takeaway. For those already familiar with Map/Reduce concepts from Hadoop or something else may not experience the same "aha" moment when introduced to the concepts, but no doubt they'll be just as impressed with the way Lo-Dash implements it. By comparison, Java implementations will feel clunky and slow (as if it didn't feel that way already). Additionally, the author includes a chapter on bench-marking, breaking down the specific types of operations and showing where the performance advantages lie and when best to use Lo-Dash over alternative implementations, even showing where you can now make use of lazy-loading.

This book was immensely valuable in improving my grasp of functional programming and is one of the privileged few I keep nearby my desk and liberally marked with sticky notes. It sounds weird, but I'm much more proud of the code I write too and feel that it's much easier to look at. That may be subjective though; it's possible other devs who review my code may throw a fit and slip into some outdated rhetoric on the disadvantages of functional programming and method-chaining, but eventually those dinosaurs will be phased out sent off to the retirement homes.

Complete, organized, end-to-end tutorial on the full breadth of the Lodash library

The STL revolutionized C++ when it introduced a library of standard containers, iterators, and algorithms. Lodash does the same for JavaScript. I have known for some time that I should reach for Lodash or Underscore when manipulating containers in my Node.js server side code, but I lacked significant Lodash experience and resorted to searching blog posts and scrolling through Lodash online documentation looking for likely code fragments.

What I needed was a complete, organized, end-to-end tutorial that I could work through independent of any particular project to become familiar with the full breadth of the Lodash library. This new book, Lo-Dash Essentials, meets that need admirably. I appreciate the care with which it is written, and I think the author achieved good balance between explanatory text and the kind of short, digestible example code that is most conducive to learning.

Some books just get it right. This is one of those books. If like me you have been wanting to learn Lodash but could just never quite get started, this book is just what you need.

A lazy developer is a great developer. If you understand this quote then it means you value productivity, and clean syntax when you code. Lodash Esentials by Adam Bodich does exactly that, it provides a clear book and structured set of instructions for getting started with using lodash and all its amazing features. I have started to incorporated lodash more and more with all my MEAN projects and the simple use of _.pluck and _.extend have saved me hours of mindless 'for loops' that lodash already does for you, and that's just touching objects. Lodash has string, array and even function helpers that keeps you focused on what really matters. Getting good code done.
