The First Great Awakening was a time of heightened religious activity in the colonial New England. Among those whom the English settlers tried to convert to Christianity were the region's native peoples. In this book, Linford Fisher tells the gripping story of American Indians' attempts to wrestle with the ongoing realities of colonialism between the 1670s and 1820. In particular, he looks at how some members of previously unevangelized Indian communities in Connecticut, Rhode Island, western Massachusetts, and Long Island adopted Christian practices, often joining local Congregational churches and receiving baptism. Far from passively sliding into the cultural and physical landscape after King Philip's War, he argues, Native individuals and communities actively tapped into transatlantic structures of power to protect their land rights, welcomed educational opportunities for their children, and joined local white churches. Religion repeatedly stood at the center of these points of cultural engagement, often in hotly contested ways. Although these Native groups had successfully resisted evangelization in the seventeenth century, by the eighteenth century they showed an increasing interest in education and religion. Their sporadic participation in the First Great Awakening marked a continuation of prior forms of cultural engagement. More surprisingly, however, in the decades after the Awakening, Native individuals and sub-groups asserted their religious and cultural autonomy to even greater degrees by leaving English churches and forming their own Indian Separate churches. In the realm of education, too, Natives increasingly took control, preferring local reservation schools and demanding Indian teachers whenever possible. In the 1780s, two small groups of Christian Indians moved to New York and founded new Christian Indian settlements. But the majority of New England Natives-even those who affiliated with Christianity-chose to remain in New England, continuing to assert their own autonomous existence through leasing land, farming, and working on and off the reservations.

While Indian involvement in the Great Awakening has often been seen as total and complete conversion, Fisher's analysis of church records, court documents, and correspondence reveals a more complex reality. Placing the Awakening in context of land loss and the ongoing struggle for cultural autonomy in the eighteenth century casts it as another step in the ongoing, tentative engagement of native peoples with Christian ideas and institutions in the colonial world. Charting this untold story of the Great Awakening and the resultant rise of an Indian Separatism and its effects on Indian cultures as a whole, this gracefully written book challenges long-held notions about religion and Native-Anglo-American interaction

The Indian Great Awakening

This book is an excellent source for information about the Christian missionary movements in New England among the Indians. It has great coverage of the Native ministers and their work with the people. I liked the way he covered each issue and mentioned the ways Native people chose to continue to express their culture. It is a good read even if you are not a historian or anthropoligist. Wonderfully researched and pulled together into a narrative. Look forward to the next offering from this author.

Wonderful book to read with the SM child

I am a psychotherapist in residency for state licensure and am working with a child with severe/"entrenched" SM. I read this book with her and it seemed to really open her up to the idea that she is not alone and that there is a reasonable level of hope that her struggles with SM and social anxiety can be alleviated to a significant (though not necessarily absolute) degree. I believe this would be relatable to many SM children and their families as it does illustrate the primary and generally applicable SM symptoms that are manifested in most cases in some way. This is a simple yet delightful story that educates, entertains, and inspires the SM child, their family, and those who know them.

because Maya is so much like her. The only problem I seem to find ...

My daughter loves it, because Maya is so much like her. The only problem I seem to find over and over with books on selective mutism is that they are so school focused. We homeschool, so the fact that all books are not just based on a school setting, but exclusively talk about a school setting is a bit hard for us.

The perfect book for children with Selective Mutism, they can easily see themselves in this book. It gives them understanding that there are other kids out there just like them and it doesn't mean that they have to stay silent forever. If is also an excellent book for their child classmates, so they can better understand why they friend doesn't like to talk. My daughter is 3.5 and she absolutely loves Maya. She is about to get transitioned the an older group at school and we gave this book to the older group teacher, so she can prepare her kids for the new classmate. Highly recommended!

Our doctor also recommended the "The Very Quiet Cricket", but as for me I would not recommend it. It is a boring book, which has a lot of repetition and it is not clear to the child that the rubbing wing and not making a noise is the same thing as them not talking. If you don't explain it to the child, they may not get it.

This book will draw you to the authority that you already have in Jesus Christ through his death on the cross and resurrection. You can take Scripture and declare it over your live and you will see how it transforms you. There is a boldness that rises in you when you finally comprehend who you truly are in Christ and the completed work of the cross. The Word is Truth, it is the very essence of who God is and He has given it to us to use on a daily basis. Take for example Isaiah 53 and declare it, speak it, DECREE it over you if you are facing a disease or illness the enemy threw at you. It's a LIE, a lie from the very pit of hell! Don't accept what the doctor told you you have, reject it just like you would reject a moldy hamburger. You wouldn't eat it, would you? Then why sit back and accept the lies of the enemy sitting down when you have the AWESOME power of the spoken work and authority in Jesus Christ. Get the book, you won't regret it! I

A must read for learning about the authority we have over the enemy.

Kingdom Authority by Kynan Bridges is a book that will equip it's readers on how to overcome the enemy, no longer allowing him to hold any authority in their lives. In today's world evil is all around, but as long as we are in right standing with our Heavenly Father we have nothing to fear, because he gives us authority over the devil. When I picked up this book I was amazed at the easiness of understanding what Mr. Bridges was saying. He has a way of writing that makes me feel like he is talking to me, in a down to earth easy to understand way. He doesn't make unrealistic claims, instead he provides spiritually based information that he backs up with scripture that is eye opening to say the least. I have read several books on spiritual warfare, and what makes this one unique is that while the author talks about the devil, his main focus in on teaching us how to claim our power and to break the bondage that he has placed so many of us in. Each chapter opens with a scripture, and ends with a deliverance prayer, and touches on such topics as, exposing the enemy, called to conquer, dressed for the battle, just to name a few. When i first picked up this book I sat down and read it cover to cover but I have since been rereading it as a few chapters a day using it as a Bible study of sorts, using it as way to dig deeper into the scripture of spiritual warfare.

Until Christians embrace and understand the authority over the enemy, an authority that all Christians have who are in right standing with the Heavenly Father, they can never really claim victory over the enemy. In a world with so much lukewarm religion where we are often taught to fear the devil, if we are taught to believe that there is a devil at all, we need to change our thinking and realize that God is in control, and he gives us the authority to be in control as well. It's time to embrace the power we have, but first we must learn about the power we have been given and Kingdom Authority by Kynan Bridges will provide readers with the knowledge they need in order to claim that power.

I am considering getting a copy of this book for everyone in my family because the subject matter is that important. We all need to fully understand the authority that we have in Christ. I wish I knew this as a young believer. And even know there were new things that I learned. I want my kids to read this book so they can walk in victory as well!
