About the Author
Neil Hilborn is a College National Poetry Slam champion and a 2011 graduate with honors from Macalester College. He was a member of the Minneapolis National Poetry Slam teams in 2011 and 2013, which placed 5th and 6th respectively out of 80 teams. Poetry is a hard art form to review. I will say this, however; Hilborn really Poor's his heart into these pages. Its a bit short but if you're into poetry it is worth every penny. My copy is full of highlighted and marked pages. If you want to see his style before you buy, check out some of his poems on YouTube!

Neil Hilborn is one of my favorite spoken word poets. I came across him and Rudy Fransisco a few years ago and I've been in love since. When I heard that Neil released his own book full of his poems, I had to buy it. I received it a few days ago and I'm blown away and can't stop reading. I have so many annotations and notes for my favorite lines, etc. I really think anyone who is a fan of Neil's or of poetry in general, would love this

I saw some of his spoken word online a few months ago and automatically fell in love with his poetry. I can't do the book justice in a review but I would recommend it to anyone. Neil Hilborn's poetry is at once personal and relatable, and has already become a major influence on how I write. Read this book, and you'll be better for it.

About the Author
Ralph Monday was born and raised in the Appalachian mountains of northeast, Tennessee, just miles from the Kentucky border. At present he is an Associate Professor of English at Roane State Community College in Harriman, TN. He is published in over 50 journals. He also paints and has had several exhibitions over the years.

Ralph Monday’s collection of poetry feels like a postcard from a by-gone era. The haunting ghost of 1950s America permeates these poems with an enigmatic sadness that wavers between lose and being lost. In the first half, “Empty Houses”, Monday constructs sensory portraits that invoke the sullen solitude of long stored memories caked in the musty leather smell of photo albums buried in the attic of a lost relative. There is nobility in those layers of dust. Part 2, “American Renditions”, bares a similar stamp of melancholy laden remembrance, however this longing is for a reconnection, not with a person, but an entire culture. The poems become waving postcards from the beach you never spent a Summer at or perhaps the knowing smile of the not-so- innocent pin-up beauty. They flicker by like 8mm film reels captured on manicured lawns by Kodak brownies.
Ralph Monday has a distinctly unique voice that will assure these poems the recognition they deserve.

This collection of poems by Ralph Monday is one of the most exciting and refreshing poetry publications to come along in a long while. The use of language, imagery, metaphor is extraordinary. The book is divided into two parts. Part I "Empty Houses" is a tour de force of the themes of memory and imagination. The reader is swept along in a swirl of images depicting loss that is universal. Part II "American Renditions" also concerns memory, but in an entirely different way. Here the reader will encounter many American themes in time and space that are deftly handled with the skill of a master of language. Mr. Monday is a voice to be reckoned with.

At over 133 pages the book is large for poetry, but well worth the price. Highly recommended, this book will be remembered for years to come.

Guest Editors

James Dodd is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research, USA. He is the author of Violence and Phenomenology (Routledge, 2009, 2014), and Crisis and Reflection: An Essay on Husserl’s Crisis of the European Sciences (2004). He is currently working on a book on phenomenology and architecture.

Ludger Hagedorn is Research Leader at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, Austria. From 2005 to 2009 he was Purkyne-Fellow at the Czech Academy of Sciences. His main interests include phenomenology, political philosophy, modernity and secularization. He also lectures at New York University in Berlin.

This is a very useful book, with extensive pictures of Indian camps of the northern US and Canada, favoring Algonkian indians. Anishinabe is the original word for Algonkian, Ojibwa, Chippewa, and other such words. The Tribe of Foxes: The True Inside Story About the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, and the museum book put out by the Mashantucket Pequot museum, which I can't seem to find on Amazon, are also very useful in this regard. By way, wigwams circulate heat far more effectively than square houses. If you compare the pilgrim houses, in that Massachusetts museum at Plymouth, with the wigwams, the pilgrim houses were at most 10 degrees warmer, F., than outer temperature, in the winter, while Wigwams were a good 30-40 degrees warmer, F., in winter. The Iroquois longhouse became the Quonset Hut, of WW II fame, which is an Iroquois longhouse built of metal, sometimes on a concrete foundation.

We used this book in the classroom to teach background knowledge of the Ojibwe culture in preparation for reading The Birchbark House. Even though it's below grade level as a book to be read through, it's a great tool to use in sections or pieces because it's engaging and visual.
