"In 1977, I met Franco Basaglia, director of the manicomio [lunatic asylum] at the hospital in Trieste, who was also the leader of an alternative psychiatric movement. Taking advantage of the chaotic political situation in Italy at the time, he started to close several psychiatric hospitals with a group of doctors, and had 'Law 180' passed in 1978, which resulted in the definitive closure of the asylums. Franco encouraged me to take photographs of this reality, 'If not, they will not believe us,' he told me. With more than a hundred thousand people interned in psychiatric asylums all over Italy, the situation was indeed dramatic. He also introduced me to directors of other asylums in Venice, Naples, Arezzo and Turin. For four years, until the closure of the hospital on the island of San Clemente very close to Venice, I photographed these places of pain to preserve them in memory and to pay tribute to Franco Basaglia--who died from a sudden illness in 1980. My film about San Clemente came out in 1982, but it's only now thirty years later--after a long pause--that I have finally edited and designed the photographic work that was begun all those years ago." --Raymond Depardon

Excellent coverage in a few Italian insane asylums

You probably couldn't do this book nowadays, in the US anyway, with all the privacy laws. Excellent coverage in a few Italian insane asylums. I'm glad Depardon archived it. More importantly I'm thankful that the people running the asylums had the foresight to know the importance of documenting this material. The printing is good. The book I received had a damaged cover with a bubble in it. But that has no effect on the great documentary photography inside. Depardon included his recount of the project from start to finish.

Jessica Minnick is an Information Technology Instructor at Pasco-Hernando State College in New Port Richey, Florida. She has more than 15 years of web design experience. Lisa Friedrichsen is a Professor at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas, where she teaches some of the school's leading database and web development classes. Her undergraduate degree is in Engineering from Iowa State University, and she holds an MBA from Drake University. I used this book for an on-line Web Design class that took you through different steps to design a web page from chapter to chapter. The chapter that covered changing your design for a mobile, tablet, and desktop device did not do a good job explaining building your CSS and why you put entries where you did. I think the editors could have done a better job on proofreading the steps. I ran into several snags that wee making me crazy because I was not getting the results that were in the book.

Window on the Wehrmacht

In the mid 1930's German soldier and First World War veteran, Captain Adolf Von Schell, found himself on an exchange program at Fort Benning, Ga. During his tenure there he lectured extensivley on his wartime experiences which included first hand knowledge of the maneuver battles that had characterized the war against Russia and the earley stages of the war in the west. These lectures and two contemporaneously written articles on the U.S. Army and the Army of the Weimar Republic have been compiled into a remarkably provocative little book that should interest scholars and warriors alike.

It is not surprising that many readers have likened "Battle Leadership" to Rommel's "Infantry Attacks". Both books are exceptionly well written documents built on the experience of company grade German officers and designed to pass on lessons learned in blood. However, "Battle Leadership" differs from "Attacks" in its short proscriptive style. Where Rommel gives us a narrative of his war experience, Von Schell has highlighted five specific lessons each of which is explained in a short discussion of an actual combat experience:

1. The effect of tempo on military planning after hostilities commence.

2. The inaccuracy of nearly all intellegence at the commencement of hostilities.

3. The use of the attack in gaining timely and accurate intelligence.

4. The virtues and uses of veteran troops.

5. The cultivation of bravery by personal example.

For the most part Von Schell is restating-- albeit in his particularly lucid and accessible style-- truisms with which any well read militarist is familiar. However, in his analysis of two of these points he strikes out on somewhat novel ground.

Von Schell's discussion of tempo and its effect on combat planning answeres a problem that has nettled young subalterns for decades; what is the point of writing long operations orders in peace if they will seldom if ever be used in the heat of battle? Von Schell suggests that the value of such orders lies as much in shaping the young officers mind as in providing him with a tool for combat:

All armies of the world learn, in peace time,

how to write beautifully constructed orders.

I believe that it is correct to learn to think

of everything and to forget nothing, but

we must never lose sight of the fact that,

in a war of movement, our orders will be

brief and simple. PG 63-64

Perhaps Von Schell's greatest piece of wisdom regards the collection of tactical intelligence. Noting that the only valuable intelligence is timely intelligence and linking this idea with the absolute requirment of keeping up the tempo of the offensive, the author writes, "The best reconnaissance will always be the attack."

If "Battle Leadership" has any weaknesses they can be easily seen and understood if we remind ourselves of the authors perspective. Von Schell's almost obsessive interest in the value and uses of combat hardened veterens-- while of little value to untried junior officers in command of equally untried troops-- is quite understandable when we recall that he was one of a generation of German soldiers who had survived three years of the most intense conflict in human history. Likwise, the authors preference for poor tactical security and dispersion measures can be overlooked if we recall that Von Schell learned his trade at a time when military thinkers were just beginning to develop dispersion and security as an answer to the machinegun and long range artillery fires.

Indeed, it is in takeing a measure of the authors perspective that we begin to see the true importance of "Battle Leadership". More than a handbook of infantry tactics, "Battle Leadership" is a remarkably personal and unintentional account of how the German experiance of the First World War forged the Wehrmacht of the Second

Very good must have...

First of all if you are looking for this book contrary to what the used book sellers are telling you THIS BOOK IS NOT RARE OR HARD TO FIND! YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY $100 TO GET A GOOD COPY...you can get it new for about $4 at the Marine Corps Association book site or wait 4-6 weeks and pay $2.50 +s&h...The book itself is a very insightful report by an officer who obvserved the effects of war on his command. Even though almost 100 years old this is still a great book for any Soldier,Marine, or military historian.

Extremely Informational

First of all, this book is recommended to be read by all United States Marines by Major General Twomey United States Marine Corps.

This book is a prime example of a great leader. This German Officer shares with us a life full of experiences during World War I. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out what it takes to survive in a battlefield not physically, but the most complicated of all, the mind. He does explain how you can never prepare yourself mentally during peace time.

Ive read this book once, and cant wait to read it again.

This collection of essays and excerpts from the globe-spanning career of Morris, one of the most admired and imitated travel writers alive, is fantastic in its depth and breadth. But whether it also succeeds as a portrait of the world in the years 1950-2000 depends on readers' response to Morris's impressionistic style. Morris had the good fortune of beginning her career (when she was still James Morris) writing for two great British newspapers, the Times and the Guardian, when the British Empire still spanned the world, and she's spent much of her career writing about former colonies. But she is much more than a chronicler of empire. This work finds Morris in Atlanta, Jerusalem, Baghdad, Capetown, Kyoto, Odessa, La Paz, Sydney and Addis Ababa, to name just a few cities from which she files reports in the first two decades of the period alone. Her style of reporting, increasingly abstract as time passes (and increasingly joyous following her sex-change operation in Morocco, a story she tells from a touchingly wry distance), finds her ignoring politicians and celebrities in favor of the wisdom of cab drivers and the tone of street signs. Her job, as she writes, is "simply to grin like a dog and run about the city." A brief, pessimistic epilogue aside, Morris likes what she has seen in the world. Inevitably, her many devoted readers will be disappointed by the necessary brevity of most of the excerpts here (she has written more than 30 books), but as an introduction to the writer's luminous prose, there is no better place to start. 6 illus.

Morris is one of the world's most preeminent travel writers, having been at it for a half-century. The author of several books, this Welshwoman has nevertheless made the travel essay an important aspect of her oeuvre. Her talent in the short-space evocation of place is given ultimate tribute in this magnificent collection of her essays, arranged chronologically, which span not only the world, as the title indicates, but also--as the subtitle reveals--her entire writing career. Jan Morris began life as James Morris, and her sex-change operation is discussed nearly halfway through the book in the essay "Casablanca: A Change of Sex." Before that, she was James and wrote as James; indeed, the very first essay in this collection is about the first ascent of Mount Everest, by Edmund Hilary in 1953, with whose expedition James Morris served as the only accompanying reporter (for the Times of London). Morris' immaculate and well-turned prose emphasizes her self-appraisal: "I am by nature an outsider, by profession an onlooker, by inclination a loner, and I have spent my life looking at things and happenings, and observing their effect on my own sensibility." Her eye for the telling detail is stiletto-keen, and her sensitivity to calling things as they are but never doing so in a condescending fashion remains undiminished. A journey through time and place

This book is excellent. The author's descriptions of the locations she visited over the past fifty years as a journalist are insightful and, in my mind, fairly accurate. She is more than a travel writer. Morris is an artist, taking what she sees in the places and people of foreign places and turning them into vivid expressions on the page for the reader to both visualize and experience. Morris also does a great job at not only explaining the places she writes about as she sees them, but also at explaining the history behind where she is and the significance of it all. This book not only is a journey across the vast world we live in but is a great way to study the history of the post-modern twentieth century world. The only confusing part, however, is the sex change she underwent in Morocco in the 1970s. I wish I would have known that going into the book because the photo of the author on the back flap undeniably shows a woman, but for the first half of the book the author was constantly referred to as a man. The whole thing had me confused, but became more understandable after Morris' trip to Casablanca where he/she came out of a surgeon's basement literally a new . . . uh, person. (an interesting chapter in the book). Despite the interesting surgery, though, this is a well-written book worth reading.

Pure joy

I stalled on coming to the end of this, but consoled myself that I can start over again tomorrow.

Jan/James Morris is the next-best thing to having been everywhere myself. He/she tells us everything we want to know and nothing we don't, concentrating on people, food, drink, buildings, scenery, bars and a splash of history, everything we would have noticed if we too had been there at the right time. What a wonderful way to see the world.

(Warning: the squeamish may want to skip the chapter called Casablanca.)
