Great guide!

I had gotten this book a year ago from a Japanese publisher and am happy to see it translated.

Funny thing is, this book didn't need much translating at all. Besides the introduction and bylines, everything else is visual. And that's the magic of this book. This is the last of the trilogy of LEGO Technic Idea books, so while it brushes on the techniques of the previous two books, it quickly goes into building working machines.

The models shown have been built with colorful parts which show how the assembly is done without instructions, so this is a guidebook and reference for old and new builders to make their models move. The overall design of the magazine is clean, only showing the models. No notes are shown, nor are they needed - there are a set of graphics that are diagrams of the movement of a model, but the photos are clear enough on their own without any further description.

The very raw builds also open up the reader to use and adapt the models inside to their creations - want to make a moving spider? Look it up in the contents, and build and then add your building to it. In that respect, the book lives up to its title as an idea book.

Looking through the book will be instructional to the older builder and inspirational to the newer builders. As a reference, this will be a useful book to people using the LEGO MINDSTORMS systems to develop robots.

I recommend the book to anyone who has a pile of Technic pieces and is wondering: What can I build? With this book, you'll be very surprised.

Unique and invaluable designs

I've been playing, building, and teaching with LEGO (particularly Technic and Mindstorms) for years, and am familiar with most of the books either directly or indirectly related to the Mindstorms range that have been published over that time. I am confident that Isogawa's work is unique. I bought Isogawa's Japanese "orange book" when it was published, and have found it to be an invaluable resource, for both my own designs and in the classroom. This series goes further though, and is in English! (Even though the core of these books require no translation, it helps to have the table to contents in English - and more readily available in the west.) The models are colourful, clear and very easy to follow.

Nobody is going to have all the parts to make each and every model in these books (except, presumably Isogawa!), but that's not the point. The value of these books is in the ideas that the models convey. Whether you're looking for a solution to a specific design challenge (eg. "How could I convert rotational movement to linear movement?"), or just flicking through for ideas of what to create next, these books are a great way of overcoming "designer's block".

All in all, a great series!

Powerful refute of Christianity. Score one for Skepticism.

There is one word that can sum up the effect of this book for me: "powerful". Most of the books I have read about religion have been pro-religion and this is very different from the old "We need religion to fill the spiritual side of ourselves" claims they always make about it. These books produced a response from my heart, but this book produced a response from my mind. It makes the claim that there is no more evidence of God than there is of Zeus, or any other god that humans have created for their stability throughout history, and it is very effective in proving this claim. It is about time someone cries out for the intellectual awakening of people instead of one more emotional one.
Dan Barker was an evangelical minister and missionary who did everything from writing songs and skits for children to working with youth groups to preaching street sermons to adults. However, somewhere in the course of this career he began to be aware of the fact that his religious beliefs were in serious conflict from his intellectual knowledge about our scientific world.
This book brought many negative aspects of Christianity to light that had been completely ignored, conveinently explained away, or totally unknown to me in my super-religious past. I never realized the Bible was so anti-family and that the various qualities we attribute to God are so self-contradicting. It also further examined some parts of the Bible I had already wondered about, such as its blatant sexism and racism, and its inaccuracy in accordance to history, although I had been told by every preacher out there that it was correct.
If you are from a Christian religious background I can only imagine the response my little book review is illiciting, and I totally expect to receive self-righteous hate mail under the guise of loving Christianity. However, I completely understand, for if I had read a book review like this during my very devoutly religious stage, I would have felt the same way. All I can ask you to do is read the book for yourself. If you read it and disagree with my conclusions, that's great and there is no harm done. I think that if anyone can truthfully answer to themselves the questions that this book raises about religion and can still say that it is in accordance with what they feel is moral and intellectual, their faith will only be strenghtened. But if you have ever been able to sing along with good old Alanis "In the name of the father, the skeptic, and the son, I have one more stupid question..."- in other words, if you have had some doubts about religion that you would like to explore but have never known a way to do this, you will really appreciate this book. All I can say is that it totally changed my perception of religion and I was as strong a believer as anyone out there, having been in church since I was an infant and continuing it in my youth by going on many mission trips to foreign countries. I was not an atheist who picked up this book so that I could prove I was still right; I was actually a pretty strong Christian who was beginning to have some doubts, and when this book was offered to me by someone I had serious pre-conceived judgements about it and even started reading it with the desire to prove the guy totally wrong. I was sure everything he would say would be like "I don't believe in God because I want to do what I want and no one can tell me what to do." However, this book appealed to my mind as well as my sense of moral rightness, and although I started page one with a preconception that it was totally offbase, I finished it with a strong "Amen, Amen. Finally a book about religion makes totally sense!"

Excellent!

Some of the same arguments I have been trying to deal with for the last 29 years. I was born into this world naturally and will go out of it naturally.
Barker comprises his book with some of the newsletters that he has written in the years after his conversion to reality.
The only thing that is wrong about some of his writings is that he uses the abreviations "BC" and "AD"; which are used only by the uneducated christian who thinks that their "savior" was born in the year one - what happened to the year zero, where is the historical proof of his birth, etc....? The proper designations are C.E. and B.C.E.
The book is a good reference style book. Very good book and open minded.
I need to get one of his shirts ... because I am your "happy neighborhood athiest" also.

A fascinating insight

It's true that many of the arguments against religion presented in this book are quite well known. However, this is not where the value of this book really lies. The truly enthralling parts of this book are Dan Barker's brutally honest account of his own journey towards atheism, and, just as important, the insights his own experiences have given him into the workings of the Christian mindset. His account of his final performances as a Christian musician, when his heart was no longer in his material, are truly poignant. It really demonstrates just how much a person invests in the religious world-view, and the corresponding emotional cost associated with its renunciation. It's hard, but Dan's book demonstrates that it's possible, and very worthwhile.
In all, this book will offer spellbinding insights for both the Christian and atheist alike, as it eloquently and honestly dicusses life in both camps and the transitional stage in between.

If you can't make it to Broadway...

After falling in love with "The Book of Mormon" soundtrack I wanted to know more about the story and since I can't exactly afford a trip to NYC to see the show (not that i could get a ticket) the book was the next best thing.

The book in includes a forward by Mark Harris, authors notes from each of the three authors, production history, a list of scenes and song titles and, finally, the complete script with song lyrics. The pages are nice and glossy with colorful accents and small photos from production throughout the script.

The script itself is brilliant. I think the review from Hollywood Reporter by David Rooney says it best:

"The show manages to have a comic field day with Mormonism while simultaneously acknowledging - maybe even respecting - the right of everyone to follow any faith they choose. Or invent."

I can't recommend this enough, if you like the soundtrack, or are curious to see what all the fuss is about and can't see the show itself this book is the perfect way to experience and enjoy "The Book of Mormon".

The PERFECT companion to the Cast Recording

If you love The Book of Mormon, this is definitely a book you need to pick up. It's the complete libretto along with pictures of the cast and even close up shots of some of the fun props and costumes used in the production. The actual book of the show is hilarious and has a lot more heart than what you get from the CD. Hands down the Best Musical Libretto I've seen for sale in a good long while.

Best script I have read of a musical in YEARS!

I was not expecting how amazing the quality of the writting would be from a Trey Parker and Matt Stone musical. Wow....the lyrics are so clever and the writing is nothing short of fantastic. I just bought tickets to go see this show in October cause they are sold out for MONTHS!!!! If you want a taste of this musical, get a copy of this script and soundtrack and enjoy!

Not Much Here

Save your money. More than half of this book consists of "practice" texts--and, of course, you can practice on any book you happen to be reading.
There are a *few* useful exercises, which include reading two lines at once, then 5, then whole paragraphs, then whole pages. You can't read like this for comprehension; the authors have you do it to get used to scanning segments of text at once , rather than single words. Another exercise has you read for one minute for comprehension, another minute at double that speed, and another minute at triple. These exercises DO help, but as far as speed reading instruction goes, that's it. Really.
There is also some very basic instruction on memory-enhancement techniques, nutrition, posture, previewing texts, and so forth--standard stuff.
In short, this book is a waste of money. Tony Buzan's book "Speed Reading" is far better. Some of the older speed reading books offer far more in the way practical instruction than this book does. "Double Your Reading Speed," published in 1964 by The Reading Laboratory, comes to mind.

This book really didn't accomplish what it set out to do. It started off with the claim that the reader will not only read faster, but that reading comprehension will increase. The only real speed reading excercises are for viewing (not reading, as the book says) large chunks of text quickly. But it ends there. There are no tips about comprehending material while viewing it quickly. There are tips for memory retention and classic conditiong for relaxation (both of which you can find in an Intro to Psych class), as well as smart ways of how to read texts (look at charts, topic sentences, etc...), but nothing about understanding the chunks of text we are "viewing" quickly. I admit that after doing these dizzying excercises, my regular reading for comprehension increased in speed a little bit. However, it is still not up to the rate I would consider "speed reading."

Final Verdict: If you really want it, check it out at the library or buy it used. But look for a better book first.

Disappointing

This book is a real disappointment. There's very little actual helpful material to improve your reading speed. Moreover, it hardly covers sub-vocalization, which is a mayor factor inhibiting your readingspeed. The hand exercises are silly and will not increase your speed. A large and useless part of the book only covers texts for practising, like you can't practise on any other texts... Buy another book.

About the Author
C. Michael Bowers is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. He is also the Deputy Medical Examiner in Ventura, California. Dr. Bowers is a practicing forensic dentist and consultant who has testified and worked on hundreds of cases where dental evidence has been involved. He is a former Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology, a Senior Crime Scene Analyst for the International Association for Identification (IAI) and has written other articles, chapters and books on forensic dentistry. He owns and operates his own dental practice in Ventura, CA.

The text includes a thorough overview of what a prospective expert should be aware of regarding the legal system and how forensic evidence should be prepared for courtroom presentation. The chapters cover topics such as the admissibility of forensic expert evidence, character traits of expert witnesses, voir dire and direct examination of the expert, cross examination - the expert’s challenge and the lawyer’s strategies. The text also includes an insightful exploration into the science behind forensic science, ethics and forensic expert failures.
The content is well organized and easy to follow. In twelve chapters Dr. Bowers and his co-authors Dr. Mark Page, Mr. Brent Turvey, and Ms. Wendy Koen present information with clear and concise descriptions. The book opens with a reprint of an interesting presentation given by the Honorable Harry T. Edwards – The National Academy of Science Report on Forensic Sciences: What it Means for the Bench and Bar. The first chapter gives the history of English common law and as the title implies, provides advice for the beginning expert.
Chapter 2 explains science as it pertains to forensic science. It explains concepts in a manner that is easy to understand. In Chapter 3 admissibility of expert evidence is discussed. Included is a necessary background of important cases that have contributed to admissibility. The next chapter illustrates forensic expert practice.
Chapter 5 describes how to mange a forensic case, case preparation and how to speak with attorneys. Chapter 6 follows on from this with good and bad traits of expert witnesses, listing what to do and what not to do. Chapter 7 deals with becoming qualified as an expert as well as what to expect with direct examination and Chapter 8 focuses on cross examination.
Chapter 9 resumes with a scientific principal that all experts should be aware of namely uniqueness and individualization in forensic science. The book wraps up with the cases of forensic failures, ethics, and the power entailed in expert testimony.
Most chapters conclude with a box entitled - Innocence Blog- which highlights a case of wrongful conviction. In conclusion, this book is a useful reference and a great addition to any collection of forensic texts.

A must read book for people in the forensic jobs!

Everyone watches CSI and forensic related TV series, fake. This is the real information, the science and the expert evidence. Described why certain cases go wrong. And the responsibility of an expert witness. This book opens up my mind and allows me to understand certain legal cases from a different perspective. A great book to have.
